7 Things You’ve Likely Never Grilled Before

The grill isn’t just for meat anymore. When we think of grilling we typically think of a juicy steak with perfect grill marks dripping with taste. Imagine it, the sizzle, the smoke, the lines seared perfectly into it’s pink underbelly. It’s a masterpiece. But if you think outside the box, that perfectly grilled item doesn’t have to be meat, it could be (gasp!) a watermelon slice and you, my friend, have become the wizard of the grill. With a little imagination you can be an artist at the grill with some out of the ordinary, healthy, barbecue grilled alternatives.

1. FOILED AGAIN

Aluminum foil. Never leave the grill without it. Your expertise and some aluminium foil can turn your outdoor grill into any oven. You can add nuts or chickpeas to a foil pack or on a baking tray lined with foil and you have a roasted, crunchy alternative to chips as a side dish. Roasted legumes reduces fat and adds flavour as well as immune boosting antioxidants.

2. GRILLING VEGAN STYLE – KALE & LETTUCE

Kale is not for everyone but for many, it is such a healthy alternative that can be paired with herbs and spices to create a complimentary side dish. It cooks well on the grill and is high in vitamins. It’s partner in the garden, Lettuce also gets some extra zest when it’s cooked on the grill. Romaine lettuce, drizzled with olive oil and cut in half lengthwise so both sides can char is amazing and a must try. Take your favourite seeds and sprinkle the romaine with them or add a light balsamic dressing. With just over 21% of your daily calcium needs in romaine, it is a must try as a side grilled dish.

3. USE YOUR MELON – WATERMELON

Not just for dessert anymore. Cut the watermelon into pieces about 1/4 of an inch thick and sprinkle with a bit of olive oil and season with salt, pepper and a pinch of smoked paprika. Then grill for two or three minutes. This will have you lighting up your grill every day to enjoy this new found taste.

4. PEACHY KEEN

Why stop at watermelon? Go for something low in calories and chock full of vitamin A like fresh peaches. Peaches and summer, they go together and grilling a peach for about 3 minutes with its skin still on helps to keep them sturdy. Add some spice like a bit of cayenne for a kick or skewer them with melon and grilled strawberries for different take on summer dessert.

5. POPCORN

Why not use your grill to create a healthier version of buttered popcorn? Popcorn kernels covered in a bit of vegetable or canola oil and put them in a tin on the grill. How long to grill? You’ll know when the popping stops and you won’t have any of those chemicals in your popcorn like in the microwave bagged popcorn.

6. WE’RE NOT MONKEYING AROUND – BANANAS

Yup, nature’s most portable food is not only delicious but it is packed with potassium! Lightly grill a banana for dessert. Just slice a peeled banana in half and pop it on the grill. Grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich, now you’re talking!

7. WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS – GRILL LEMONADE

Yup, your grill can change almost anything into a new tasty treat. Cut a lemon in half, dip the sides in sugar grill for 10 minutes (they will caramelize) and then use the juice of the lemons to mix with water and fresh mint or rosemary. You’re welcome. So fire up the grill and use your imagination to create a unique, wonderfully grilled meal your friends and family won’t soon forget.
